Our Story

Menter y Plu was founded in September 2018 as a Community Benefit Society with the aim of buying Tafarn y Plu, Llanystumdwy and run it as a community pub.

Our campaign to buy Tafarn y Plu, 2018

Shares in Menter y Plu was offered to the public and we raised over £80,000, with locals and people from all over the world contributing. With a mix of grant and interest-free loan of £120,000 from the Community Asset Development Fund (funded by the European Regional Development Fund), the purchase was completed on 1 August 2019.

The Plu is a traditional pub that is over 200 years old and still retains many of the traditional features from the 1950s. There is a bar and lounge at the front of the pub, with space to hold meetings and small events. In the autumn of 2020, we had the help of the television program Project Pum Mil (S4C) to build an open-air stage and transform the pub’s garden.

COVID-19 interfered with our plans in March 2020 but we continued to serve the community during the lockdown periods. During that year the holiday accommodation next door, Capel Tabernacl (Capel Bach), came up for sale. We did another share campaign, raising over £30,000 of capital and succeeded in buying Capel Bach with a interest-free loan. The self-catering accommodation sleeps six people and proves to be a valuable income stream for us.
